The Steptoes face a succession of domestic and personal complications, from Albert's attempts to find companionship to Harold's romantic interests and ambitions for their business. Money, music and even their horse provide further sources of conflict between father and son.

Plans for home improvements, new business opportunities and a more comfortable life lead to trouble at the Steptoes' yard. Along the way, Harold encounters romance and social aspirations, while Albert becomes involved in schemes of his own.

Marriage, politics and the possibility of a life beyond Oil Drum Lane bring new tensions between the Steptoes. Their business and home life also become increasingly complicated as Harold tries to move forward while Albert remains resistant to change.

Harold and Albert face changes in their personal lives, from the loss of their horse and Harold's romantic entanglements to questions about family and health. Harold also dreams of greater independence, while the pair turn their attention to improving their home and business.

Politics, family matters and changing circumstances bring fresh complications to life at Oil Drum Lane. The pair find themselves caught up in disagreements over their home, relationships and ambitions, while Albert's past also comes back into the picture.

Harold pursues writing and acting while Albert becomes involved in family affairs and welfare matters. Their increasingly bitter disagreements lead Harold to seek help and even attempt to divide their home, but circumstances repeatedly force them back together.

A fashion shoot at the Steptoes' yard, Harold's troubled love life and Albert's unexpected interests provide a series of unusual disruptions to their routine. Their final run also finds them dealing with family secrets, physical setbacks and Albert's attempts to contact the dead.
